A Valentine Experience with Heart and Soul

Nab a table at Nobu Hotel’s new secret supper bar Nami for an intimate Valentine’s Day date. By Judith Baker & Jane Egginton

The Nobu Hotel in London’s creative hub Shoreditch has already caused a stir with its striking architectural design. Now it is putting itself on the map as a romantic destination with an innovative twist.

Creep downstairs to Nobu’s lower ground floor to find a hidden gem. Nobu has transformed its bar area into Nami, a tapas style bar serving distinctive cocktails and Japanese street food. With its discreet lighting, comfortable seating and delicious small bites, this is a perfect, imaginative venue for a Valentine’s Day supper.

Nami has contemporary Japanese animated art projected on the walls which creates an unusual and relaxing space. There is a speakeasy vibe to the bar with its moody lighting and private atmosphere ideal for secret assignations and quiet conversation.

The menu is surprising too. A selection of small dishes perfect for sharing on a low candle-lit table next to a fire makes a romantic setting especially on a chilly London night.

The croquettes were dainty little bites with lime and aioli and a pretty tray of sushi and veg featured tuna, yellowtail and baby corn. Sweet shrimp tempura with Japanese rice was delicate and delicious and grilled Shushito peppers with a tasty yuzi miso were an interesting twist on Spanish pimientos. Make sure to leave room for Nami Nami, a delightful trio of pretty choux pastries, Japanese style.

The cocktails were as intoxicating as the surroundings. Smokey Geisha combines sake, mescal and tequila with fresh watermelon was a highlight and the Kurumata was a heady mix of mescal, plum liquor and fresh passion fruit. Both were served in elegant glasses with exquisite pink and purple fresh flowers.

For the ultimate Valentine’s tryst, head upstairs for a night in the stylish Nobu hotel and book into the new spa Kokoro which is offering a special Valentine’s package.

Kokoro, which means heart soul and mind, in Japanese is offering a 60 minute massage in a private couple’s room with heart-shaped macaroons and champagne.

Find Nami and Kokoru at the Nobu Hotel, 10-50 Willow Street, London EC2A 4BH
