Baia in a suburb of Naples has ancient underwater sites predating Pompeii. It is home to a 2000 year old sunken city where the Romans would holiday and entertain.

The underwater Archaeology Park has amazing well preserved sites including the Pisoni Villa and the mosaics of Villa Protiro all surrounded by schools of fish. See the well preserved walls and statues. It is possible to pass through marble bathrooms and reception areas which would have been enjoyed by Roman holiday makers. Some have referred to it as ancient Rome's Vegas as it was obviously the scene of some wild parties.
I was travelling with my husband who is a keen scuba diver, but the sites here are shallow and suitable for experienced and new divers alike. I was able to see some of the wonders on the sea bed from a glass bottom boat from nearby seaside town of Baconi
The sites are fiercely protected and careful steps are taken to ensure the sites are explored with caution and respect for marine life as well as the historical sites

Non divers can visit the Flavian amphitheatre, (the third largest Italian amphitheatre) modern day spas and the temple of Serapis in Pazzoulia, a Roman marketplace. The city of Naples itself is just as short train ride away with fabulous buildings, lovely squares and of course great pizza!
